NL dead?

Post by BSOD2600 » Mon Nov 14, 2016 5:17 pm

Anyone have an idea if NL is dead?

Hasnt been any public releases since 7.0 final came out in June 2016. Forum posts near none. Lots of various bugs with SuperLeech service missing posts and the NL client itself. Yet they still happily bill the monthly service charge...

Unfortunately I think it is dead. Been using it for a long time and there's too many bugs.

Where's the OP for that 8b3 post? Seems I'm missing it. Also must be more of an alpha, since its not listed on the download section of the website under 'Latest Beta Release' (which is currently blank).
Very few posts from the main forum admins lately too.

"Dead" might be a little overrated. Their software is working and their services are all running properly. Slow on recent updates might be right. But I guess the team working on this isn't particularily large so maybe they just don't have much time on their hands right now. The unofficial forum release 3 (pre beta) of 8.0 also shows that people have still been heavily working on NL, it features a completely revamped UI and other stuff.

Honestly, nothing much has changed since posting this ~6 months ago. In fact, if anything things have gotten worse.

- tons of forum spam which mean the admins are no longer around frequently.
- supersearch is missing a ton of results when manual searching for content. however, if one obtains a .NZB from a forum, the articles download. Often the articles are named exactly what I was searching for and not obscured...

Sad. This use to be an awesome product + usenet provider.

thanks for being honest! That's important to us.
Newsleecher is not dead...

The version 8 is almost ready for release - and it's a major change :o) - good change! :D It has taken a long time - maybe too long yes.
I know i have told earlier (also in this post) that it's coming soon - but we ran into some issues with it...but it is almost here.

Forum: We are really fighting with spam - we are keep doing changes to make sure it doesn't get spammed. But it seems like we don't succeed. I will talk to the team to find a solution.

Superseach: I am really interested in hearing more of these problems. If you send me an email (to the support at Att. Scuba - i will make sure that it will be handled and fixed urgently. I just need examples.)

I am always here to help - you guys can also send me a private message!

Thanks,

"The version 8 is almost ready for release - and it's a major change :o) - good change!"
Sounds like a statement out of the Donald Trump playbook.
The New health care bill is almost ready. It's gonna be really great............. But it never gets here.
SAD! :^o

I agree if it's going to be a week or two in May - hello, it's now July :)

Yes but the test group found some errors before release which have to be resolved.
So yes it's delayed.

There is a very good reason why people think NL is dead. When NL 7 was in development, there were more than 20 betas over a period of two years. All previous versions also followed that same pattern.

But NL 7 Final was released in June 2016. More than a year ago. Since then, there has been nothing. No updates to NL 7 to fix the various bugs. No publicly available betas of NL 8.

Yes, there supposedly is a "Forum Beta 3" of NL 8, but I see no evidence of it anywhere, and at this point it's at least 9 months old now. I think it has become quite obvious that making NL free was a bad idea (almost as bad as charging by the month) that has hurt development.

It's a shame because NL is the best program of its kind. Nothing else even comes close. But when you constantly say "coming soon", "coming next week", "coming next month", etc., and then nothing happens, it just reinforces the idea that there is no real development going on.

Sure, sometimes there are problems, and sometimes things get delayed. Stuff happens. But, again, it's been more than a year since anything meaningful was released.

Oh well, hopefully you'll prove me wrong soon.

Yes there is - and it should have been released some weeks ago. But after testing some important bugs were reported and being looked into these days and fixed before release....
But it's coming very soon.
I can quote and keep quoting various of these posts.

My 2 cts, somewhere in the past, the main developer of NL decided it was time to have a life/family/climb K2 and split the team and the rest is just riding the wave....

But then again, if he did i think it is really awesome...
