Exactly how is a SuperSearch overhaul going to be a major version increase of the client? It seems to me like a minor (mostly GUI) update and some major work on the server? Or is there more to 5.x we're not being shown?

Many users don't have SS (extra subscription)
So imo the main program doesn't deserve a version number upgrade for something that's really a separate part.
BTW the last 2 changes to SS where actually major downgrades.
I renewed my SS subscription but I feel myself more and more forced towards the warez path because of such ripoff actions. There is nothing bad about paying the coders for their work. But that also means the coders have an obligation to actually listen to feedback. And what's more removing functionality that was payed for. That's just as much theft as using warez!
And when I post something like that in this forum I get the answer "not enough users used that functionality" or "it was done to improve SS performance"
Well my answers to that are if you are to lazy to recode that functionality find another job! The SS performance is not my problem. I payed for certain functionality and it's up to you to deliver that.
So my idea on this is scratch that roadmap.
Start reading this forum and implement what the users ask.
That should be your roadmap!
About that roadmap. If you post a roadmap for 2 versions with a 'list' of 2 items on it you are making a fool of your product and yourself.
A full version takes about a year. This kind of roadmaps scares away more existing/new users that it attracts.
Just letting of steam folks
Sorry bothering you with this. If only the ones that need to read this would read it and act on it!
Time to leech a xxxmas movie now |

It's really a pity too see that :
- keep downloaded / failed articles in the download queue
is in the Wishlist list for a long time ago, I hoped a lot to see it included in version 4.x (since no news of it in 3.x) and No more talk about it.
It's really a pain to see all you queue disapered because NL couldn't managed it correcly...
I love NL but this missing feature... |

A while back (while I think version 2 was still in beta) the road map at the time said that a text reader was going to implemented in version 4
In fact a couple of messages from a few years ago mention this
http://www.newsleecher.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12464&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=text+reader
http://www.newsleecher.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2614&highlight=text+reader
Now I'm reading this is getting moved to version 6. Can I ask why this is being pushed back again especially since its seems like its was at least a couple of years ago when it was announced?

Actually text reader has been listed on the roadmap since August 2004. At that time it was listed as being for version 3. It's only been 7 years.
Honestly, I really badly want text reader ability, but it will suck for one reason. Almost (99.999999%) guaranteed we'll have to download all of our headers yet again when it is implemented as the current method of grouping and storing the headers is completely incompatible with proper threading of articles for a text based approach. Especially when the subject is completely changed on a reply and the only thing linking the reply to the original post is the data within the headers of the messages. This of course gets even worse as providers continue to increase their storage but often skimp on the number of headers they provide. Combined with the very common issues of grabbing headers fully for extremely large groups (although much better in the 5.x betas) without multiple tries since it can't automatically resume grabbing up to the current header when told to and a disconnect occurs. That makes the future and inevitable re-download of all headers a daunting proposition. |

ROADMAP UPDATE FROM THE MAIN WEBPAGE (http://www.newsleecher.com/):

NewsLeecher Version 6 :
Lastly, we are going full throttle on NewsLeecher software development again! Plans have changed for the upcoming "NewsLeecher Version 6" line, because , whereas the releases were supposed to implement full text reading support, NewsLeecher V6 will now primarily focus on "Automated Leeching", fully integrated with SuperSearch, as well as scripting support.

Personally, I MISS the preview BOT window triggering (in the BOT windows)
Fiddly to set up, but excellent in use for previewing pics, nfo's, etc, in posts.
Pretty sure this was dropped with a promise to bring back later back in v4.0 somewhere (about same time the 'roaming' temp download folders were introduced) |
