I can't remember which news client allows you do to this but I loved it b4 I got newsleecher.
The ability to download a selection of headers from the server, not just the most recent, or all headers.
The app in question used to give you a horizontal bar representing all headers from oldest to newest, and you selected a portion of the bar and the app would grab the corresponding headers from the server. If you knew roughly your providers retention, and the date something was posted you could guess pretty well as to which headers you needed and just grab those.
Kinda redundant since nbz files but it was still a nice feature.
Re: Bandwidth throttling, until its implemented people may want to have a look at Net Limiter (sorry no url I am at work). Its a great bandwidth monitoring/limiting tool. You can limit each thread an application is using both up and down and also specify between local and external traffic.
P.S dutchkillers, you can do what you asked with net limiter too.... |

Yes.
You can set netlimiter to limit the bandwidth available to Newsleecher at any time.
For example 8am - 6pm 0kb/sec
6:01pm - 11pm - 20k/sec
11pm - 7:59am - unlimited.
I find netlimiter an essential app, you can just impose a 50% cap on your dl speed when you want to use your bw for something else like playing online games or faster surfing.
It also keeps track of all the processes on your PC that are using your net connection.
P.S Its very small and unobtrusive, around 800k I think. |

UNS has announced to have more storage online in a short time. This making the retention VERY long. This makes the demand for a scheduled header download even greater.
I hope this feature is implemented soon, so that I dont need to download 3.000.000 headers each time I forget to update certain groups every day/week..
Any updates ? |

There are other programs out there that can do what you want in the meantime, I use macro scheduler http://www.mjtnet.com/macro_scheduler.htm
During a weeks holiday I had mine grabbing headers and retreiving articles from several groups as I was in the middle of some 7 dvd sets. |

I don't I'm afraid, the key to the program is to do it manually writing down all the steps then translate them into macro scheduler, it usually takes a few goes to get it right.
Eg to grab all headers would be something like
SetFocus>NewsLeecher* (Bring the program active)
MouseMove>64,96 (Move mouse to 'usenet manager' tab)
LClick (make tab active)
MouseMove>643,190 (move mouse to 'update group' button)
LDblClick (double click it get all headers) |

Ok, thanks for the tips.
So for everyone also wanting to use this. I have made the following macro and set it to EVERY DAY at 3:00 in the middle of the night.
| Code:
|
SetFocus>Newsleecher*
MVW>Newsleecher*,0,0
MouseMove>50,5
LDblClick
MouseMove>77,100
LClick
MouseMove>600,260
LClick
Press LCTRL
Send Character/Text>A
Release LCTRL
MouseMove>463,195
LClick
|
It works when newsleecher is running. You can have NL minimized OR not set as active window. Maybe if I find out more of this macro coding I will make a version which also runs newsleecher when its not active.
It will also maximize NL, so that the coordinates are always the same. |

Ok, a better version
| Code:
|
IfWindowOpen>Newsleecher*,NLopen
Run Program>D:\Program Files\NewsLeecher\newsLeecher.exe
WaitWindowOpen>Newsleecher*
Label>NLopen
SetFocus>Newsleecher*
WIN>1,NewsLeecher v1.0 beta 30*
Press LCTRL
Send Character/Text>2
Release LCTRL
Press LCTRL
Send Character/Text>A
Release LCTRL
MouseMove>360,195
LClick
|
As you can see there are some things you need to take in account.
Run Program>D:\Program Files\NewsLeecher\newsLeecher.exe
You should change this to the exact location of Newsleecher. Probable just replace the D: to C:.
WIN>1,NewsLeecher v1.0 beta 30*
Change this to the title of your Newsleecher, if you use beta 30, you can leave this unchanged.
MouseMove>360,195
For me these are coordinates on the Update Group button, if this script doesnt work for you, you need to find out the coordinates of the Update Group button in your Newsleecher.
This script would be running without problems if there was a shortcut key to the Update group button. But this shortcut isn't there, so maybe this could be added ? |
