Yes I was using Giganews (US server) since that is the problem server here. I also have the Send Group Command enabled.
What firewall and antivirus software do you have running? What brand/model is your internet router? Any other software running at the time that could be causing network issues? _________________ Please be aware of and use the following pages...

Linksys BEFSR41
Grisoft AVG
Regularly Running:
Web2Pop Thunderbird/Hotmail pop3 retrieval. (used to use a different program Hotpopper, and the problem happened before I switched to web2pop) In fact, the problem happened before I started using any hotmail pop3 program)
The only problem retrieving posts with NL are the ones that are over 80 or so days old. (and of course anything not yenc)
This problem for me started when Giganews extended their retention from 60-70 days. At first it was just articles in the 78+ day range, then when GN went to 90 days, it changed to the approx 83+ days
I've had AVG off at times and still had the problem.
I don't keep anything else running on my system regularly, there will be different things at different times. Alcohol120%, adobe acrobat, java, winamp, firefox, thunderbird, IckyExplorer7, notepad++, Agent, word, Nero, GoToMyPC etc. |

did you use the standard 119 port on the US servers? or use an alternate port or SSL? _________________ Please be aware of and use the following pages...

sorry, i should have listed those before.
Standard port (119) on US server. do not use SSL yet.
I am trying some right now that are at 80 days, and the same thing:
The port status window shows "idle (transfers scanned)" and the progress shows the beginning of two half bars, the description shows the article title.
They sit there for about the 20 seconds and then time out with the log messages I've posted before.
These are three Sherlock Holmes episodes in a.b.sounds.radio.oldtime that show 80d 13h 04m (sample). A unique part of the header is "SherlockHolmes #3".
They show up in SuperSearch with that search term in music.
I selected them from the article list no supersearch. |

Anyone know a fairly simple way I can trap the tcp/ip traffic on port 119 so I can put that here and maybe solve the problem?
It's so frustrating not to be able to utilize GIGANEWS for it's great retention features with Newsleecher.
Thanks |

Ethereal is an open-source network protocol analyzer that might help you track down the problem. Of course it requires knowledge about TCP/IP network packets _________________ Please be aware of and use the following pages...

Thanks, I'll look at it. I do have some knowledge about TCP/IP, although rather rusty at the moment.
It's obvious that MY Newsleecher is doing something different for articles over about 80 days when trying to retrieve them. Hopefully I can figure out what. |

I was using NL with newshosting a few months ago and never seemed to have any problems. I cancelled my account with newshosting. Just yesterday I signed up with Giganews and downloaded v 3.7 Final. I am having this exact problem on almost every download. It will get to a certain article and hang. That connection will time out and another will pick up the same article and hang. Before you know it I have all connections hung on different aricles. I spent 4 hours last night trying to download several different files and all did the same. I have a download running this morning that seems to be working.
Has anyone found a solution to this problem? |

ok here's an example, do a super search on "FILLS (Harold.And.Kumar.Go.To.White.Castle.DVDRip.Xvid.DMT)" you should find 4 files in a.b.movies.divx (about 6 days old), according to ss they are complete, but if we put them in the download queue (put them at the top of the queue) it turns out file 1 is only 10/61 parts, the rest are 0/61 parts. the download fails and the files get stuck in the queue.
|
Thanks for the info dwazegek
I'll look into it asap!

Has this bug been fixed? I have used NZBs to d/l and all of them (6 to be exact) are hung up in the queue, 99% d/l but not completed or saved.

I'm experiencing the same problem and am able to recreate. I use Usenetserver.com as my provider and they just went from 30 day retention to 101 day. All of a sudden I'm getting the Idle (Transfers Scanned) message on anything that is more than 30 days.
I've spoke with support from usenetserver.com and they think it's a problem with the client because they haven't had any other problems reported. The tech said that they all use newsleecher and haven't had the problem and that it must be a config issue on my client. The problem with that is that I haven't changed anything from default, so I doubt that's the case. |

Yo.
I started getting this bug after installing the v3.9 beta 5 version. After removing that version and reinstalling v3.8 final, I'm still having the same problem.
Has anyone else experienced the hanging issue with group headers? I am. The only workaround I've found is limiting the total speed to about 100kb/s. If I let it run any faster, the connection hangs after a few minutes. |
