some weeks ago i put the 'Article Cache Max Garbage Percent' setting at 75%, said yes' to cleaning and had the 'Don't Ask me Again' checkbox checked.
this worked well - since then i hadn't been asked for cleaning anymore.
after updating the group (around 1.500.000 articles in this group), i deleted some crap posting headers with the result that again nl automatically starts cleaning when trying to close the program.
the cleaning process runs around 1 hour, then nl closes down but actually cleaning wasn't successful (cause everytime i'd load this huge group, nl would do the cleaning anew at shutting down the program).
so there is no way to work with a group this big....

in case anybody has a similar problem......under 'settings' -> 'interface' -> 'Reset - Never Show This Dialog Again - Flags' it's possible to make the 'cleaning...' dialog pop up again. so checking the 'No'-box lets nl shut down having saved all downloaded headers.
