Newsleecher only appears to work when you log in with Administrator privileges under XP.

It is bad to run as Administrator unless you absolutely have to (for installations or configurations.) I always run as a regular user with least privileges. This way, when I do run into viruses on the web, they don't have the authority to install themselves. It has been well over ten years since I caught my last virus.

When I first installed Newsleecher 3.9 final, I had to be administrator to install it. Fine. It then worked fine for me under my regular user account, although there were a couple of warnings about not being able to update the registry.

But now my license has expired and Newsleecher won't even start up for me under my regular account.

So how do I get Newsleecher 3.9 final to run under a regular account which does not have Administrator privilege?

TIA!

The application should work as a limited user but the registration won't work because the 3.9 version tries to write to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ hive which is read-only for users.

As an Administrator user, change the permissions on the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\7F68A003\ hive so that Users has full control. This will allow limited users to write the license key.

Thanks for the response! I tried your suggestion, but it didn't work. Sad

Let me give you a few more details...

I am running Windows XP Pro 64. The hive you listed did not exist, but I did find and modify hive HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\7F68A003. I assumed the difference was from running the 64 bit version of XP.

My machine's name is KAGA and my regular user account is Bob. (This will make it easier to described what happened.)

I originally, over a year ago, paid for a license and installed Newsleecher 3.9 Final while logged in as Admin. I then logged in as Bob to configure and run NL. Everything seemed to work except for the two error messages at the beginning when NL could not update the Registry.

Then earlier last year I ran out of disk space and had to stop using NL. Not only did I run out of space for downloading files, my C: drive filled up when I tried subscribing to a particularly large newsgroup. I don't know if this could have corrupted any of the support/configuration files. It would have been shortly after that when my license would have run out.

A couple months ago I was able to afford more hard drives and have just completed upgrading my file server to 8TB plus adding another 1.5TB to KAGA. So I should have enough room for a few years. Very Happy

I tried to start up NL as Bob, but it would not come up. The splash screen comes up, it gets as far as "Initializing ~ Visuals" and then closes up.

I tried to bring up NL as Admin and it came up, but had no memory of my server or what groups I had subscribed to. This is when I learned that my license had expired and I blamed Bob's failure on that.

I also figured out that all the server and group information had been stored under Bob's profile. I pointed NL to Bob's definitions and when I ran NL as Admin, it got its memory back.

But for the reasons I gave above, I really don't want to run as Admin. As Capt. Hook would say, it is just bad form.

So I posted the question and tried your suggestion, but it made no difference.

The bottom line is that I want to do two things:
1) I want to be able to run NL as Bob without error. (I have never found the need to use Super Search).
2) I want to move all support files off of C: and on to a 1TB drive I have reserved for the purpose (so that I never fill the C: drive again). I saw the instructions for this in the FAQ section.

The possibilities that I see are:
-) Uninstall NL and reinstall 3.9 Final. Configure as you indicated.
-) Uninstall 3.9 and install 4.0. Configure as you indicated.
-) Renew my license.
-) Implement some quick fix which you are now going to share with me.

So, what do you think my best options would be for going forward?

Thanks!

The only thing saved in the registry is the license key. All configs are files as mentioned in the FAQ

well if you want to use 4.0 and your license has expired, you will need to renew it. 4.0 has proper support for user and saves the license in HKEY_CURRENT_USER instead of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

If not, I would suggest you just create the newsleecher.ini file pointing the configuration files to a different drive as you wanted. Make sure it is working properly with new configs.

If it still has problems with the registry, you might have to give full control to Bob for the entire HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\7F68A003 path, not just the 7F68A003 entry.

Once it is working with the configs in the new location, you can copy your old configs over to the new location making sure the ownership rights are correct.

Thank you!

I re-enrolled and installed 4.0. Then then followed the instructions in the FAQ and everything worked as I had hoped.

Thanks you again.
