Hello all,
after having suffered on zone alarm, I enjoy using Outpost Pro for a few months ago : just an efficient and light firewall to be recommanded.

I have been using Tiny Personal Firewall along with NOD32 for a few years now. No problems or conflicts yet. It's a very solid combination.

i've discovered that avast anti-virus free version, while being better than bullguard paid for anti-virus/firewall version at detecting viruses, can prevent newsleecher logging-in to news servers or preventing download if login is allowed.
this occurs on windows xp pro 64 bit and 32bit and xp home. it can be bypassed by switching off all on-access scanners from the sys tray menu; but that leaves you without real-time virus protection.
the built-in firewall with 64bit windows has proven mostly serviceable but it is well lacking in functionality:
my machine seems secure, i don't have unusual charges on my credit cards but some programs access the web even if you specifically disable access in the control panel and there's no shutdown web-access 'panic-button'.
bullguard integrated anti-virus/firewall [paid for version] works flawlessly with newsleecher but it didn't discover a trojan in a movie clip i got from a mate for over 3 weeks [& it updates 2-3x per day], i only discovered it when i attempted to watch the clip on a networked pc running avast - router logs show no outgoing connections from the infected movie so i suppose the firewall made up for the anti-virus' mistake. still, i use avast now - i can always run a manual scan before i open anything.

There is a long know issue with Avast causing problems with NewsLeecher when the Avast NNTP scanning option(s) are enabled. Disable the NNTP scanning option(s).

With Kaspersky, my download speeds slow down quite a bit.

Which version of Kasperky? I am not familiar with Anti-Hacker (I guess this is what you are using), but make sure that any NNTP traffic checking is disabled. Please let us know what you find.

ah, good ..... it's not just me, then. but, err - i don't seem to be able to isolate nntp scanning, web shield seems the closest match but disabling that doesn't help [or anything except all online scanners]. i do have a vague recollection of seeing such a switch for nntp but it must have been an earlier version [or perhaps it would re-appear if i bought the pro version].

Any experience using Live OneCare's firewall with Newsleecher?

A lack of complaints would suggest it works well, but then it is relatively new.

I use Zone Alarm Pro V6.5.722.000 and Symentec client security for AV on my Xp Pro Laptop and have no trouble maxing out my 6meg dsl connection

I use the same version of zonealarm with mcafee VSP v.10 on my xp pro desktop with the same exact speeds.

I have been using zonealarm pro for 5 or 6 years And I've never had any problems with it. I currently use usenetserver for nntp but have used many other services including giganews and about 6 others over the years all with positive results. I have been really happy with usenetserver over the last two years. When I signed up retention was only about 13 days but now it's over 30 and the price has stayed the same, these days the service is much better than it was when they were first starting up. You Can't beat the price of their unlimited account and they put no restrictions on downloads whatsoever I am connected 24/7 and downloading close to 6mbps and have never had a problem with either usenetserver or my isp complaining about a constant maxed out connection.

I'm using (trying) Kaspersky internet security and when I start downloading with newsleecher the cpu goes to 100% and kaspersky is using 40% of the sources. I don't know why but it really brings down the download speed and the computer performance.

I assume Kaspersky Internet Security includes the Anti-virus software as well? If so, read this thread about AV compatibility with NL. It includes a link for instructions to fix Kaspersky AV 6 to work with NL properly.
