First quite annoyed that such a large number of people have been affected by this and its the community who have been offering suggestions and workarounds. However this has worked for me and it seems as though the cause is two corrupt COOKIE files. I would like members who experienced this issue to report if this resolves the issue or not.

1. Make sure all processes of newsleecher are closed.

2. Click start -> Run.

3. Type in %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies and click OK or press enter.

4. Rename the Index_05970870.dat and IndexIE_05970870.dat files to Index_05970870.old and IndexIE_05970870.old respectively.

5. Relaunch Newsleecher. Should prompt you to enter your registration key but not give you the usual error message about impossible to write license key.

I looked into this further because the problem started occuring under my local admin account as well and i think forcing newsleecher process or if your machine crashes seems to cause data corruption in the files associated with it. This really peed me off!!! Launched process monitor (free download from microsoft) and checked all registry and file operations which were failing which pointed me to the above files. Hmmm.... maybe storing license information in the registry was a bad idea as it was easily exposed. The numbers in the file seem to correspond (I think) to the reg key which held the license information in the previous versions. I think the error about trying admin account was still an error message from the previous versions which needed an admin account to write to the reg key, please note if I am correct then you do NOT require admin rights for using news leecher as the cookies folder is stored within each users profile.

I waffle on too much I think.

Sorry the path i specified is correct but im running 64 bit version of vista which splits the %appdata% folder into local, locallow and roaming... apologies if the 32-bit version has a different path, didnt know! Smile

I'm running 64bit as well Wink
There is no difference between the 32bit and 64bit versions when it comes down to the user folder hierarchy.
%appdata% has always pointed directly to the roaming application data folder, it did so in xp (although the folder path wasn't explicitly labeled as roaming in xp), and it does so in vista.

%appdata% is %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming
So the path should either be %appdata%\Microsoft\etc or %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\etc.
If it isn't, then your environment variables might have been messed up somehow, or the appdata folder itself is messed up.

er you are correct Smile , i realised i cut the entire location of the address bar which was c:\users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies and from that i assumed %appdata% env var = c:\users\(username)\AppData. just echo'd it now from command prompt.

(bows to apologise, lol)

will edit the first post now!

This fix worked for me Smile

My vista 64 bit system had crashed while Newsleecher was running. On a reboot, when loading it told me beta was over and i needed to register, I fetched my key and when trying to enter it, it complained about not about to write to system and to try in admin mode, it did this twice then said it was accepted, it then said I had to reload where upon it gave me the same thing.

For me, the files were named something different but were similar in that there was a foo.il file and a IndexIE_foo.il file, i renamed both of these and next time I started Newsleecher all was well. I noticed these two files with their original names appeared again at this point.

For me the files were in the path C:\users\username\AppData\Local - quite a different place than for the original poster, I wonder if where it puts these files which are clearly related to the license key in a different place for people. I also had to show all hidden files to stumble across them.

Good luck if you have been cursed with this headache.

I have the same problem.
I run NL 3.8 Final on Vista Business 64 bit.
Everything was fine until my licence expired earlier this month.
After I extended the licence i now have to keep fetching a key every time I start NL.
I have tried running in XP compat and administrator mode but it does not help.
I occasionally run Winclear but even when i do not run it the problem still occurs.
Does anyone have an answer for this problem?

Hi, seems to work here also...but in IE7 i regularly use the erase browsing history tool, and it includes these cookies as well. Unfortunately there is no 'trusted cookies' area around in ie7.

A recent beta version removed the bug of losing the key when purging the IE cache.
