Although I am not aware I do anything different than you do (i.e. Ubuntu 7.10, Wine 0.52, NL 3.9B11 (6, 9), the only thing I get starting NewsLeecher is

Code:

Exception EExternal Excelption in module KERNEL32.dll at 00020F8C.
External Exception 8000100

Any ideas?

Just a quick update which I'm sure that more than a few of you will be interested in.

I've been doing some testing with the latest Ubuntu 8.04 Alpha, plus Wine 0.9.52, and the load time for Newsleecher has been MASSIVELY decreased.

I had a typical load time of 10-15 minutes on Gutsy 7.10, and now that's down to under 15 seconds for the entire thingUbuntu 8.04 Alpha to boot up.

Keep in mind that this is still Alpha software at the moment, but things are looking VERY good indeed!

EDIT: I wonder if someone would like to try Wine 0.9.52 on Gutsy 7.10 and see if you still get the same result?

Well, while I´m not running Ubuntu (I am on Gentoo), but I still have the long load time with the wine 0.9.52, so I suppose this speed-up you see may be a kernel setting. Which kernel is Ubuntu 8.04 Alpha based on?
(I am on 2.6.23-gentoo-r5)

Are you also seeing the memory consumption problem that I wrote about? This is really the only problem I have with this solution, it kind of slows the box down when the memory resourses are constantly 100 in use...

Right now it's running on 2.6.24-3-generic.

No I'm not. I've had Newsleecher open for about 6 hours straight now, and it's still only using up 56.6MB of memory.

Wine is only taking up a paltry 1.4MB.

Okay, I found this .dll and can start the leecher now.

The funny point is, I can't get my license key installed.

Is this some <cr> <lf> dos/linux thing? I cut the key-stuff from nano or so using the gnome plattform and paste it with the copy from clipboard function.

NL won't accept the key. Any ideas?

That has been covered several times in this thread as well.

For the licence key, see the above link to my post. I editted it for Vista users so they can find the key as well.

For the resource usage. If I have the UI open it takes up one core on full load. Memory is about 50 MB, but I have 2 GB of memory in my laptop and 1 GB is in use total, while it suppose to be much less.
I have Wine 0.9.53 installed now, and loading is still slow. About 30 minutes. Did anyone fill in a bug report for Newsleecher yet on the WineHQ website?

Can anybody confirm this? sasquatch is using 0.9.53 and does not have this boost at startup so you are alone with this change..

Another downfall for the boost. It's not the kernel that gives the boost. I installed the 2.6.24-4 kernel headers on my Gutsy installation (gave some problems with some hardware, but can be solved) using a howto on Ubuntu Forums. Still slow as a snail. I'm still fine-tuning my system for the drivers, but that isn't the problem with NL loading taking so long.

WOW ... this is actually becoming really bizarre then!

When I first noticed this happening, [which was immediately after I updated Ubuntu/Wine] I just assumed straight away that it was because of either a) the new kernel, or b) the new version of Wine.

I've put my computer through a few complete restarts, and re-launched Newsleecher probably another dozen times, and it's DEFINITELY only taking 10-15 seconds for the whole program to launch now.

I'm still relatively new to the whole Linux scene, so do any of you have some ideas what else might actually be behind this change?

This is the only machine that I can run Linux on at the moment, so it's a bit hard for me to do much more testing on anything.

Has ANYBODY seen the same speed increase in launching the program?

Maybe some scientists at the NASA complex using supercomputers but apart from them it seems you are the only person here to have it loading so fast.. Haha.. just joking. You seem to be quite a lucky NL linux user out there though.
I will give it a try sometime soon.

Not that I'm suggesting any of you don't believe me [although some of you might not Razz], I've put together a quick screen-capture just to show you all exactly what I'm talking about.

Hardy also uses Xorg 7.3. Perhaps that's where the boost comes from. Anyone that has Xorg 7.3?

Well ... some bad news, but perhaps with the possibility of eventually finding a silver lining.

I've just installed a huge batch of updates, as well as removing a heap of packages that I didn't need anymore, and it seems that NL is back to it's 20min load times again.

I'm going through my update log at the moment to see if I can figure out what might be behind it, but there's close to 100 packages which have been either installed, removed or upgraded, so the odds are kind of stacked against me a little bit.

I really wasn't expecting any of this to break it again, otherwise I would have done things a lot more carefully.

Hopefully if I can figure this out, and get it running again, we might be able to work out exactly what's behind it.

*fingers crossed*

It looked impressive that capture, but I am kinda stuck now. I am 3 days away from my license renewall, and I am not going to renew it until it runs decently under wine or linux.

I've made a virtual windows machine and tested with all of that, but that's far from ideal..

I'll follow this forum from time to time to see if progress has been made. Until then it is NO newsleecher for me.

regards,

Wiz
