Ok, I found the licence for the normal Vista operation. When using the Windows Search, I found 2 files that contain the licence in C:\users\<username>\AppData. There are 2 .il files there that can't be seen normally, even if you show both hidden files and system files. Now I'm starting to hate Vista even more. Glad I don't use it (just this once for testing). If XP won't have any updates, I guess I just switch to Linux instead than going to Vista. _________________ Fill in your bugs so NL will get better. |

Did you export it as Win9x/NT version? You can see if you did that if you open the .reg file in a text editor like notepad (or gedit ). At the top, it should say 'REGEDIT4'. Then import the key and it should work. Something I also found out, is when I selected the key ('folder') for export, the import didn't work as I thought it would. When I selected the values and exported them, the import worked.

Yeah . It was because i didnt use regedit4 . Worked now.
Seems Vista makes those two .il files for the key instead of putting them in the registry .. This only happens in Vista and not in all versions above 3.9 b5 as i said earlier.
Another reason to ditch my Vista partition,I guess |

It would be nice though to have newsleecher running smoothly on linux. I mean the wait for 10+ minutes kinda takes the fun out of it.
I've been looking at what pan can but it misses the nifty features Newsleecher has. I'll see if I can tweak it a little before desciding to pay for yet another year (have 2 months left).
I definately am not going through the hassle in building a virtual machine with windows on it just for Newsleecher.
Anyone an idea on how to speed up the load a bit?

With previous versions, I was able to run it from a terminal and after the splash screen changed and additional info came in the terminal, I could use CTRL+C a few times (not too much or it would close again) to advance to actual program operations. Now, however, the loading process gets canceled completely. I also noticed that when running in Wine, my cpu load is abnormally high. Just fetching headers takes a full core working. That isn't good. _________________ Fill in your bugs so NL will get better. |

Yeah, my dual core has a full core on 100% now while loading newsleecher. I wonder what it is it's doing.
I read your tip about control+C'ing while loading, but like you said doing so kills it all. |

When a new version of Wine is released, I will ask one of the developers on why it does this and to look into it if possible. We all like to see that fixed. For me, NL won't start anymore, it just sits there taking one core down with useless work. Guess it's because of the latest alpha release. _________________ Fill in your bugs so NL will get better. |

Just another reason why NL should be ported to Linux, even if left in a beta state.
I'm no coder, but now that the IE dependency has been removed, isn't it simply a matter of converting all of the windows API widget functions to GTK or Tcl/Tk calls?
If it loaded almost as fast under WINE as Windows I'd be satisfied, but as was stated before, it's not worth it to install a virtual machine with windows just for NL. |

Version 3.9b11 seems to have thrown an new spanner in the works.
I installed a fresh copy under XP in order to get the key details for my Kubuntu 7.10 install (previously I was using Vista, and couldn't get it's details to work).
Under XP the licence doesn't seem to be in the registry any more
So I ran up b11 under Wine, waited the requisite 10 minutes plus for it to start up and tried to import the key in the correct manner. After another 10 minutes it failed again with "the key not being correct for this version".
Please, can NL either be ported to Linux properly or at least be made compatible with WINE?
Surely this thread shows there's a healthy interest in NL under Linux, nothing else comes close to it's functionality and now that dependence on IE has been removed it shouldn't be too hard. Many of use "techies" are trying to migrate ourselves to Linux after the disaster that is "Vista" and this would go along way to helping us achieve this. And yes, I would still pay for it. |

I believe that the Wine programmers need to take a look at NL too, so they can get it to load faster. After all, Wine 'tries' to be Windows by redirecting Windows APIs to the Linux counterpart. If they know what APIs NL uses and why it takes so damn long to load, they can optimize it.
Spiril, do you have an option to compile NL for linux, or compile it using linux and the Delphi compiler for it (Lazarus) if you have the time? You do write NL in Delphi, right? Perhaps it works the same on Linux if it's compiled for it. _________________ Fill in your bugs so NL will get better. |

Hi all,
I tried this method to install NewsLeecher on an Ubuntu Gutsy notebook and a version of wine grabbed from http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/ but it won't work. The app. installs and you can launch it but it will hang when booting, as stated in previous posts, but this time I waited 15 minutes and it stayed blocked on the splash image. Here is the terminal output so far until I pressed ctrl-c:

I hope, like many others, that the wine team and NewsLeecher will find time someday to look into this. |

It can take longer than 15 minutes to load. I had one time (perhaps all the time) that it took almost 30 minutes (could be more, lost count of time about when I started it) and then loaded fine. This was with an alpha version, but should be the same as beta 11.
As for porting it directly to Tcl/Tk or GTK+ calls, that is currently not possible since NL is written in Delphi, which isn't cross-platform. You can compile it in Linux, but it won't run on it if you write it for Windows. We are stuck with either Windows or the long wait in Wine. I will submit a bug report about this on the WinHQ site and hopefully they will update it asap. Very small chance it will happen in the next release but I'm sure they will work it out someday. I'm gonna see if there is any increase in loading speed with the latest Wine 0.9.52 release. I doubt it though. _________________ Fill in your bugs so NL will get better. |

OK, thanks!
Finally I do not need to start my only remaininig windowsbox anymore..
I got it to work fairly well with the instructions, using the 3.9 b11, the good things are; it uses a lot less CPU than it does on the pure windows box(!) and the disk is not as exercised as on the windowsbox.. And speed is as good as using vmware, in my case, it tops at 9,1 MB/s, which is slightly less than on the pure windows box.
The downsides that I have encountered, is;
-Long startup time. Well this is no news to you.. I can live with this.
-The search/filter box on the article tab does not display correctly (nothing in fact, even if it does work).
-Sluggish UI
But, I have a question; is it normal that wine (wine, explorer, newsleecher) uses up all existing memory?
On this box, I have 6GB and no swap at all. All this memory is eaten up by wine after some running. I have no problem starting other applications, so I guess this is some kind of buffering?

Did someone get NL work with the SSL enabled in VMWARE 6?
(10053 Socket error).
Has someone tried using SSL enabled in the wine or virtualbox enviromnent? |

Just a quick update which I'm sure that more than a few of you will be interested in.
I've been doing some testing with the latest Ubuntu 8.04 Alpha, plus Wine 0.9.52, and the load time for Newsleecher has been MASSIVELY decreased.
I had a typical load time of 10-15 minutes on Gutsy 7.10, and now that's down to under 15 seconds for the entire thing to boot up.
Keep in mind that this is still Alpha software at the moment, but things are looking VERY good indeed!
EDIT: I wonder if someone would like to try Wine 0.9.52 on Gutsy 7.10 and see if you still get the same result? |
