These instructions are to be used to change the location of the configuration files used by NewsLeecher. Normally they are stored in the user's profile which is on the C drive (see this FAQ post for details). You can also use these steps to save the files in a unique location so that you can have different versions of NewsLeecher installed and they will not interfere with each other.
These steps are for NewsLeecher v3.8 Beta 9 to v3.95 beta 3 releases. See the post below for the v4.x releases
- Close down NewsLeecher.
- Create a file in the NewsLeecher executable folder (usually C:\Program Files\NewsLeecher\), called "newsleecher.ini".
- Add a single line with the location you wish to use for the configuration files. For example, to put the configuration files in a NewsLeecher folder on the D drive, enter
settingsFile=D:\NewsLeecher\setup.dat
Save and close the newsleecher.ini file.
- You will now need to COPY, not MOVE, your current configuration files from the old location (see this FAQ for details of the default location) to the new location.
- Restart NewsLeecher
- The above has only told NewsLeecher where the main configuration file, setup.dat, is located. Now we need to tell NewsLeecher where to look for all the other configuration files/queues/caches, etc.
In the Options>Advanced>Folders screen, set the location of the Data and Temp folders to the same location (i.e. D:\NewsLeecher\)
- Close down NewsLeecher to save the configuration
Now NewsLeecher should be using the files in the new location. You should be able to remove the old configuration files/caches/etc.
If you launch NewsLeecher and all the settings are gone and everything is back to defaults, there you misconfigured something above. Please go thru the steps again. _________________

These steps are for NewsLeecher v4.0 releases and later. See the post above for the v3.8-v3.9 releases
- If you wish to have both the 3.9x and 4.0x versions installed, you will need to install NewsLeecher into a different directory, i.e. D:\NewsLeecherV4.
- Close down NewsLeecher if it is running.
- In the directory where you installed NewsLeecher 4.x, create a file named "newsleecher.ini". Note: the format is not the same as the 3.9x ini file.
- Add a line with the location you wish to use for the configuration files. For example, to put the configuration files in a NewsLeecher folder on the D drive, enter
dataFolder=D:\NewsLeecherV4\data\
Add a line to the newsleecher.ini file with
tempFolder=D:\NewsLeecherV4\temp\
or if you want the temp on a different drive, enter something like
tempFolder=C:\temp\
In the 4.0 Final version, the tempFolder setting now is the location to hold the temporary files created when using the Open/Read command. It is NOT the location of the temporary segments of downloaded files. Those are kept in a "!! Newsleecher Temporary !!" folder within the Download Directory. At this time, it is not possible to change the location of this folder.
If you do not enter a temp location, it will still use the default location of the user's profile space on the C drive.
Save and close the newsleecher.ini file.
- You will now need to COPY, not MOVE, your current configuration files from the old location (see this FAQ for details of the default location) to the new location.
- Restart NewsLeecher
Now NewsLeecher should be using the files in the new location. You should be able to remove the old configuration files/caches/etc.
If you launch NewsLeecher and all the settings are gone and everything is back to defaults, there you misconfigured something above. Please go thru the steps again. _________________ Please be aware of and use the following pages...
