| I like to save content to specific folders so I select "Leech Specify". A dialog box comes up where you specify the parent folder and then the destination folder. Each of the two entry boxes also have a browse. When I set the parent folder via browse, I would expect that the destination folder be reference to that parent folder. If that's the case, why does newsleecher show be the C: drive newsleecher folder. It's a real pain to have to re-navigate to the parent folder and find the destination folder within. Is this a bug??? Anyway I wish this feature worked the way I wanted. |

I've had this since I started with NL about 2 years ago. I always noted this, but it never got fixed. I use Leech Specify all the time, and when I hit browse on the download folder, it sometimes jumps back to my desktop instead of the parent download folder that is listed and set as default download folder. So far, I have not found any reference to why it happens and what triggers it. I used various names as the folder name and it changed from time to time. First it browses just fine to the download folder, the other time it jumps to the desktop. It's not consistent. _________________ Fill in your bugs so NL will get better. |

When I download, I use several parent folders (eg. \NLdownload\music, \NLdownload\Games, etc) and create a subfolder for each download.
Therefor the option remember current destination folder is a bit annoying to me cos I have to go up a level first for a new download.
For me this would be resolved if there also would be a checkbox for a "Remember current 'parent folder'" option, so I would only have to type the name of the new destination folder or let the program create a name (by article subject)
so in short:
I wish for a "Remember current 'Parent folder'" besides or instead of the "Remember current 'Destination folder'" |

I greatly approve SimonLeBonbon (Guess you're French, aren't you ?).
It would be a very good improvement and quite easy to fix.
For now I check the remember destination checkbox and always use the second file browser.
Using "bckspc" is faster than navigating through a huge tree.
You can type in the second file browser a path to a subdirectory, ie "mp3/70s/Genesis/Selling England by the Pound.
Best regards
PS does NL team read those forums ? |

Yes this forum is read by the NL team, but sometimes it does take some time to pick up.
I have never understood the logic reason behind the 'Remember current destination folder' instead of the 'Remember current parent folder'.
I also use the Backspace/Del key and retype the folder name by hand or I select part of the destination and paste it on the next download.
example:
if I got a folder:
'D:\NLdownloads\Messages\T100\1985 '
Where 'D:\NLdownloads\Messages\T100 ' is the parent folder, and 'T100\1985 ' the destination folder.
If want to download the years 1986, 1987 etc. I copy 'T100\19 ' and paste it in the destination box on the next download, press 'End' and type '86 ', on the next download '87 ' , next '88 ' etc.
BTW I'm not French, but of Dutch origin.

I'm reading the last improvements in the 3.9 beta series history version and...
They did it !
So thank you very much for your work.
I've not tested the 3.9 beta yet, but I will do it shortly. And I will give my opinion back here if needed.
Thanks again. |

Hello Santa ,
Could you please restore the leech specify ctrl+Y as it was in version 3.91 and previous.
In the new version it's far worst from what it originally was. To much mouse actions required or tab actions.
also i'm not happy with newsleecher suggestion for the name of the download dir.
PLEASE restore how it was.
Thanks
Neo, |

I've tested 3.95B3 now and I must say, the remember parent folder (remember specified folder) works perfect for me.
Neo, I see you post a few massages about the CTRL-Y focus. A thing you could do is to click on the pulldown arrow (on the left side of the Browse button), then the focus is on the top most item. Hopes this will help a bit.
Furthermore, I use Newsleecher in Ubuntu (under wine) and its speed now is as fast as it was under Windows.
Excellent improvements! |

The problem is that ctrl+y is a keyboard action. Of course i could click with the mouse, but if i'm using the keyboard i don't want to use the mouse.
That's why i use the ctrl+y function.
In version 3.91 and previous i could work very fast with the ctrl+y now i can't it slows me down. I have to use the mouse or a lot of tabs entries.
ITS USED TO BE A LOT BETTER !!! |

it would be nice if the parent folder when browsed was already expanded (plus sign). if we are picking a destination folder as a sub-directory of the parent folder, it just makes sense to be able to see all the sub-directories in the parent folder right away.
I know some people may be used to it the way it is, but I can see far more cases where we would be clicking the plus sign right now to expand the parent folder than cases where we would have to click the minus sign to contract the parent folder.
If I understand correctly, the general idea of leach specify is that you have a specific parent (say a drive or folder) that all downloads go into, and the destination folder is merely where this specific file goes. For that, it makes sense that you would always be expanding the parent folder to see it's folder list. Anyone else agree? |

I tried it and see what you mean... However, it does unfold when you click on "destination"-browse button, but only if the subject of the previous post is the same. I do agree with the folder unfold/expand, cos it would save clicks.

Imo instead of having one checkbox "Remember Specified Folders", it would be better to have two.
Something like this:
Personally, I would use 'Remember Parent' more frequently then 'Remember Destination', but there are situations where it is great to remember the destination as well.
--
Another usefull change could be to apply the pretty-up folder name algorithm on the Destination Folder field :

@SimonLebon.
The whole idear of the keyboard action CTRL+Y should be KEYBOARD control.
As it was in version 3.91 and previous you could complete the whole dialog of ctrl+Y with either typing the new destination map and enter or just enter meaning that the download goes to the same directory as the previous one.
In the new CTRL+Y dialog i have to use the mouse or many tab entries to get the same result as before.
I don't like this.
However your suggestions are a welcome addition to the new dialog and would improve a lot. I second them.
It would be even better if the cursor was already in in the destinationfolder (with all the text selected) and the ok button has focus when enter is pressed.
This would restore the old situation of version 3.91 and previous. |

@Neo ( and @the Newsleecher development team o/c )
I don't know if it is possible to put the cursor on the destination field while the focus is on the OK-button
I think my suggestion (to also have a remember checkbox for the destination folder) and the focus on ok, would solve your problem, cos then you'd only have to press Ctrl-Y followed by <Enter>.
AND/OR:
A new leech specify option, something like "Leech to last specified folder" could benefit you, cos that would take you one single keyboard action |

@Simon Le Bonbon.
In version 3.91 and previous it was possible and I know (because of a lot of programming experience) that it is possible in this version also. |

| After using leech specify for a while now, I think the dialog is far more complicated than it needs to be. I don't understand the purpose in having two separate (parent and destination) boxes. Lets pretend the dialog was NORMAL and just saved the last 5 (or however many) paths (i.e., one edit box, not two). You could just pick a saved folder and change the last subfolder if needed and hit OK. If you didn't want a subfolder you could just pick a saved folder with the same parent folder you wanted and delete the subfolder name and hit OK. The way it is now sometimes you have to change two boxes instead of one and at the very least you have to change one box anyway. Why not just have one edit box that you change instead of possibly two? |
