Bug Data1:
00k2su

Bug Data2:
I/O error 103

Log:
5/10/2005 10:11:42 AM * Extracting and saving attachment "Hot Type - Malcolm Gladwell .part11.rar".
5/10/2005 10:11:42 AM * Unable to save file to specified download folder. Using default download folder instead.
5/10/2005 10:11:43 AM Could not write to description file. Please report this bug to the author

Conditions:
Version: 2.1 final.
Action: Leech (Smart):

Again, it looks like the space to the left of .part11.rar could be the culprit.

I love the LeechSmart feature but trying to download a group of files that for whatever reason someone named with spaces in unusual places is very frustrating when the Application Bug MessageBox keeps popping up.

Yeah, this is a known bug, and the trailing space is indeed the culprit. Basically newsleecher tries to create a dir with a trailing space at the end, windows then trims the trailing space, after that newsleecher will try to save to the dir with a trailing space, which doesn't exist.

Hope spiril does something about it soon, as it's quite a pain and shouldn't be even remotely difficult to fix.

Agreed. This has been around for a while and it would be nice to see the problem disappear.

I've been running into a similar problem, but it appears it may have to do with "illegal characters" in filenames (or at least very unusual characters).

This error popped up while downloading from the "jpop" (japanese pop music) newsgroup, so I assume the characters were originally Japanese and this is the closest Newsleecher (and my US version of Windows 98SE) could display:

6/5/05 6:17:26 PM Downloaded "For Sleepyleo (Buck-Tick - Bloody Trinity Mix) [2/5] - "02 ˜ZŒŽ‚̉«“ê (Live).MP3" yEnc".
6/5/05 6:17:26 PM * Extracting and saving attachment "02 ˜ZŒŽ‚̉«“ê (Live).MP3".
6/5/05 6:17:26 PM * Unable to save file to specified download folder. Using default download folder instead.

Note that there's no space at the end of the filename, and other files from this same album (tracks 1 and 3 for example) downloaded fine, into the proper directory.

In most cases where the "space at the end of the filename" bug hits, Newsleecher simply puts the file in the default directory and you end up having to go hunting for it, but it's there and you can usually recover from the problem.

In THIS case however, the file is NOT saved anywhere. Apparently the characters are a problem no matter where it would be saved.

Is it possible that the Newsleecher routines that handle file naming might be modified to handle situations like this..?

Perhaps stick a "placeholder" character (for example- x) in place of any OS "illegal" characters..?

Just noticing that he said on Tue May 10, 2005 11:48 pm he would get the trailing space issue fixed but I am using v5 b12 in April of 2012 and it has this same error. Such an annoying issue...

Couldn't you at least change the dialog for updating the download folder to just a text box... that way I can manually remove the space?
Rather than either manually making the folder then changing it so I can select the folder in the old style file tree view box...
or my other favorite option wait for it to get to the download then fail so I can come home and wonder why nothing was downloaded...

How can this still be a problem after 7 years and still no fix. If any nzb file has an ! or any other illegal character the download fails with the I/O error. I resort to downloading with a different program as my work around. What I'm I paying for if this can't get support or a fix after reporting a problem?
