Spiril, on the other hand, will have to tell any potential purchasers that if their server does not support mid access then get a better one. I think we agree that this is not necessarily a bad thing to do. Unless, your worried about sales. And I'm not suggesting here that sales should be the issue, but I'm sure it may be a consideration.
|
if you use a client the can download through mid and aid, would you even notice that your server can't support mids properly?
don't know if it's up to spiril to warn curtomers about this, isn't the trial period sufficient? if it works, buy nl, if it doesn't, don't bother.
on a side note, if a server doesn't properly support mids, wouldn't things like nzb's and the newer search engines (e.g. super search) always give bad results? so if your server doesn't support mids, super search would never work. the only way to queue items would be to do a group update/xpat _________________ Forum's Grammar Nazi:

Nope, Most clients download by AID by default and only download by MID if you specifically select a certain option the the setting dialogue.

Well what is more often the case, the server does support mid's but has a bad mid index, so it works with nzb's and supersearch, but they will get more incomplete or corrupt files than usual because the server has a bad mid index (Poor/buggy implementation).
If they take some other client which makes use of the AID index on the server articles will get downloaded as normal, So naturally the inexperienced user will blame newsleecher for the problem. |

Let’s say you get headers from only 1 server and retrieve arti’s from multiple servers that have a lower priority. This is a familiar scenario. The client may only be requesting by article number from the 1 server from which the headers were dl’d. You would know if one of the lower priority servers was broken when it comes to their ability (or inability) to have arti’s requested by mid.

Yeah..... No mid access, no use of nzbs or any other access to arti’s by mid if the server cannot handle requests by mid.

Right, what I had described as a broken server or the normally compliant server that just temporarily got confused.

This is obviously the current state of things here in the forum. I find myself giving constant explanations to test problems with another client that can request articles by mid; to make sure that you are not testing using article number. On the other hand, wouldn’t the experienced user find it not so illogical for a client to have the ability to also request articles by article number when needed?

Not all of the Roadrunner servers have a problem with message-id access. If you are getting the headers from rr and you are attempting to download very recent articles (less than a day old, on some more like about 15 hours old) and you are getting "423 article not on server" (or 430) messages then you might be having this problem. What are the error messages in the log for some of these problem articles? Make sure detailed logging is enabled in "Options|Logging".
If you are not having any trouble getting the same articles using a different client, which client are you using? You need to know if you are downloading by message-id or article number. First, see which error you are getting.

Ok, I didn't realize that you are unable to even connect to the server at all. Correct? So, rr is not allowing you to log in to the server.
Check your server settings in the Server Manager. Choose your rr server and then "Edit Server".
Make sure you are using the correct server address. Port 119.
Username and password may not be necessary. Try unchecking "server requires login", as you are connected using an IP address from your rr ISP, you probably do need to login. If still no good, try entering your username and password.

actually the strange thing is i only have problems with certain groups individually. some groups i never get "no article" errors and others i pretty much always do. i don't really know how RR pulled that one off but i believe the problem is their side, and not with newsleecher. i live in cincy and ive tried using columbus's and indy's servers with no change. i guess roadrunner changed over to message-id on only some groups in which we can only wait for others to be updated i guess. they do provide access with your cable internet service so im not complaining (and its really pretty good aside from short retention). just fire up newsbin or xnews or somethin for anything you cant download with newsleecher, that works well for me.

This does seem like the message-id index is not complete. I'm guessing that when you use other clients you are getting the headers from rr. If not, or you are using an nzb file, then there is a different problem here.

newshosting should be compatible with newsleecher, there are at least a few newshosting users around here.
If you can't connect, make sure all your info is filled in correctly, check your server's homepage and see if they're having any problems which might prevent you from connecting. If that doesn't help, delete the server profile and make a new one, it's possible the server profile got corrupted. |
