To the one who manages SuperSearch code,

I was one of the people affected by the recent newzbin hack. And since newsleecher started operating a server where some of our search logs are probably stored somewhere, I would really appreciate it if the server is operated in a way (probably its already done) where any information which might lead to link any search logs to certain Ids or IP addresses are not stored. We don’t want this kind of info get into the wrong hands. I’m sure you already know how important this feature to some of us.

Regards,

This is the first I've heard of this.

How were you affected?

Yes just check the forums. A lot of users' real identities (full names) and official e-mail addresses (not hotmail or yahoo I mean ISPs and Universities e-mail addresses) were kept on a private box which was hacked and posted over usenet. Other indexing service providers are making fun of them. If you are operating a service you need to be careful, a lot of organizations and competitors are looking forward to destroy Usenet or your service.

Currently, there's no personal data stored on the Super Search server, but when supersearch becomes a subscription service, I'll have to store some personal data on the server to check search authentication. I will, of course, do everything I can to make the data secure!

so even if someone would have cracked version of newsleecher they wouldn't be able to use super search, seeing as you have to authenticate for a search?
if so, :applauds spiril:

I agree with you, I knew there will be a kind of authentication...but keeping minimum information on the server -like IDs only and no search logs- is best for us.

I'm happy as long as the content of our searches and the result of our searches are not saved to a log file.

Ohhh... This get me paranoid now... Imagine if it was kept in a secret log... Eventhough they said it isn't... Like how Microsoft has a secret log no one know about and you can't even find it unless you look real hard for it in DOS...

And then that secret log was sold to those big corps that want to sue you... Ohh... Scary....

I need to look into NewsHosting now... They probably keep a log...
