SS down but not reporting the fact

When searching for anything at all (tested in both categories), SS pretends it didn't find anything, but when I search for "TV" as an example of something that should give me too many hits to list, this shows in logs:

5:52:46 AM * SS Connect Info : "Connection timed out".

I'm on v4.0b18 and would expect a proper error message if NL can't reach the servers...
